Louvre Shutter Systems

Give your home a nostalgic charm while shielding it from the sun.

A louvre shutter is an external shading system made of slatted leaves hinged in front of a window or door. The leaves fold back to the side to open; closed, air still passes between the slats while the sun, the heat and the view in from outside are cut off. Ferrini louvre shutters come with two frame options, aluminium and PVC, in all RAL colours and wood-effect finishes.

A louvre shutter works with leaves that fold to the side; if you would rather close the same opening with a slat curtain that rolls up, roller shutter systems are the alternative, and if you want to set the light angle even while closed, sun louvre shutters are.

How it works

The leaves swing on hinges at the edge of the opening; groups of two, three or four fold back like an accordion and rest against the wall, clearing the window completely when open. On wide openings the leaves run on a top track as they fold. The slats are either fixed or adjustable: on an adjustable leaf a lever on the inside face turns the slats, so you set the light and the ventilation even with the leaf closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between PVC and aluminium louvre shutters?

PVC is the more economical option, insulates better against heat and sound and never needs repainting, which makes it the usual choice at window and balcony sizes. Aluminium is more rigid, so tall and wide leaves do not sag; it is powder-coated in every RAL colour and does not corrode in demanding settings such as the coast.

Are the slats adjustable?

On the adjustable model a lever on the inside face of the leaf turns the slats, so you set how much light and air comes through even with the leaf closed. On the fixed model the slats are set at a downward angle, giving constant ventilation while keeping the rain out.

Can shutters be added to existing windows?

Yes. The leaves are hinged to the wall or to a subframe at the edge of the opening, independently of the window frame, so they can be fitted to existing windows and doors without breaking into the façade.

Does a louvre shutter black the room out completely when closed?

No. Air and light keep passing between the slats; when closed it stops the sun, the heat and the view in, but it does not give full blackout. Where full blackout is needed, roller shutter systems are used.

How is a louvre shutter maintained?

On the aluminium shutter the electrostatic powder coating protects the surface, so wiping with a damp cloth is enough; on the PVC shutter the colour runs through the mass, so no paint, varnish or sanding is needed. Checking the hinges and locks once a year is recommended.

Maintenance, insulation and size differences between the two bodies are set out row by row in the louvre shutter comparison.
