A bioclimatic pergola is an outdoor system whose roof is made of aluminium louvres that rotate by motor: closed, the louvres form a rain-tight roof; open, a ventilated shade; at intermediate angles, adjustable shade. This guide explains how it works, where it is used and how it differs from glass and retractable pergolas.
A conventional pergola has a fixed roof: glass, polycarbonate or fabric. In a bioclimatic pergola the roof is made of aluminium louvres that rotate on their own axis and run on a single motor with a remote control. In Albert Genau BioFlex Harmony a scissor mechanism linking the louvres opens and closes the panels in sync and stops them at the level you want. That gives you three basic positions:
At intermediate angles you decide how much shade you want; to adapt the terrace to the time of day and the weather, simply stop the louvres where you like.
Yes. With the louvres closed, rainwater drains in a controlled way through the integrated gutters and columns, and a leaf catcher keeps debris out of the drainage line. BioFlex Harmony has been tested under a simulated continuous heavy rain of 108 litres per square metre per hour. High-density XPS-filled louvres reduce heat and noise from outside.
All three make a terrace usable for more of the year; the difference is what the roof is made of and how it opens.
| Bioclimatic pergola | Glass pergola | Illuminated retractable pergola | |
| Roof | Aluminium louvres that rotate by motor | Fixed glass or polycarbonate | Fabric cover that folds back like an accordion |
| Does the roof open? | Yes; the louvres rotate and gather | No; the roof is fixed | Yes; the cover folds back |
| In the rain | Rain-tight with the louvres closed | The fixed roof protects | Protects while the cover is extended; can retract automatically with a wind and rain sensor |
| When to choose it | To adjust sun, shade and ventilation throughout the day | For an enclosed winter garden you can heat | For shade and evening lighting, when you want the roof to open fully |
A winter garden creates a more enclosed living space with insulated profiles and glass, while a bioclimatic pergola is a semi-open outdoor solution with a roof that opens and closes. For Ferrini's own products see the glass pergola and illuminated retractable pergola pages, and for a side-by-side view the winter garden comparison.
Villa and residential terraces, gardens, verandas, poolsides, hotels, cafés, restaurants and commercial outdoor areas. It is installed as a free-standing pergola or attached to an existing building. On large areas several modules are joined with dedicated beams and connectors, and each module is controlled separately.
Closing the perimeter of the pergola with glass systems turns it into a space you can use in winter too: Tambalkon guillotine, SlideMaster or SliderNext sliding, or Tiara folding glass. Against sun and wind from the sides, vertical zip screens can be fitted to the sides of the pergola.
The two-way lighting integrated into BioFlex Harmony can be daylight, RGB or both; because the lighting sits inside the profiles, the look of the roof is preserved and the terrace stays usable in the evening.
Yes. The panels gather to open the roof area, and can also be stopped at different angles for sun control and ventilation.
The area, number of modules, profile colour, lighting options, installation conditions and the glass systems used around it; a project-specific quotation is prepared after the dealer's site survey.
Aluminium surfaces are cleaned regularly with suitable products; checking the gutters, leaf catchers and drainage channels periodically keeps the system working for a long time.
