What is a sun louvre shutter and how does it work?

A sun louvre shutter is a movable external system that stops the sun outside the glass while adjusting light and air with its slats. This guide explains the two ways they work, six models led by Tiktak Orient, and which one to choose when.

What is a sun louvre shutter?

A sun louvre shutter is a roller shutter system with movable aluminium slats, installed outside the window or façade. A classic roller shutter is either closed or open; with a sun louvre shutter you change the angle or the gap of the slats to set light, air and view. Because solar heat is stopped outside the glass, the interior stays cool and the cooling load drops. Ferrini's sun louvre shutter family has six models.

Two ways of working

Sun louvre shutters fall into two groups, depending on how the slats open:

All six models give blackout when fully lowered and closed; they are operated by motor, remote control or smart home system and are made in all RAL colours.

Tiktak Orient: slats that open to 60 degrees

Tiktak Orient is our tilting-slat sun louvre shutter, also searched for as "Orient sun louvre" or "Orient shutter". Closed, it covers the façade like a classic roller shutter; raised one notch, its movable slats open up to 60 degrees and let light and air in between them. Single units go up to 3300 × 3300 mm and 9.9 m², installed with a front-mounted or built-in (concealed) box. It can also be fitted to an existing box if the winding diameter fits.

Which one should I choose?

You can compare all six models row by row in the sun louvre comparison and see how they differ from a classic roller shutter on the roller shutter or sun louvre page. Our detailed guide to the venetian shutter: what is a venetian shutter.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Orient shutter and Tiktak Orient the same product?

Yes. Tiktak is the name of our sun louvre shutter series made up of the Orient, Daylight and Airlight models; Orient is the model in this series whose slats tilt up to 60 degrees. It is also searched for as "Orient shutter" or "Orient sun louvre".

Does a sun louvre shutter give blackout?

Yes. All six models darken the room like a classic roller shutter when fully lowered with the slats closed.

Can a sun louvre shutter be fitted to an existing shutter box?

It depends on the model and the box. Tiktak Orient and Daylight fit front-mounted and built-in boxes, the Airlight models also monoblock boxes; the venetian shutter works only with a built-in box. Our authorised dealer checks during the survey whether the winding diameter fits the box.

Is a sun louvre shutter motorised?

Yes. It runs on a tubular motor and is operated by remote control, wall switch or smart home system.
